Whitworth Women Lead Nation in GPA

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth University's women's track and field team led the nation in cumulative team grade point average in 2008, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Kristen Dormaier and Elizabeth Mattila made the USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Team as individuals.

There were 92 Division III women's track and field programs recognized as 2008 USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Teams. To be nominated, a team must carry a minimum 3.000 cumulative grade-point average.

The Whitworth women had the highest team GPA (3.642), followed by Connecticut College (3.583) and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (3.582).

To qualify for the USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic Track and Field Team as an individual, a student-athlete must have compiled a GPA of 3.25 or higher and have met the NCAA Division III Indoor or Outdoor provisional qualifying standard in at least one event.

Dormaier (Sr., Hartline, Wash.) qualified provisionally this season in both the heptathlon (4,313 points) and the triple jump (37'-9.5"), an event in which she set a new Whitworth record this spring.

Mattila (Fr., Ferndale, Wash.) qualified for, and participated in, the 400 hurdles at the NCAA Division III championships and finished the season with a season-best time of 1:02.37.
