Stelzer Wins HJ at Blue and Orange Classic

NAMPA, Idaho - Whitworth sophomore Cody Stelzer won the high jump for the second straight week, this time clearing 2.06 meters on Saturday at the Blue and Orange Classic hosted by Boise State.

Stelzer's jump (converted to 6'-9") came on his second attempt at the height. He was the only athlete to clear 2.06. He made three attempts at just over seven feet (2.14 meters), but did not clear the height. Last Saturday Stelzer set a new Whitworth record and automatically qualified for the NCAA Div. III Indoor Track and Field Championships by clearing 2.10.

Several other Pirates had strong showings on Saturday as well. Emmanuel Bofa finished fifth in the 800 meter run with a time of 1:56.46. Jeff Kintner took seventh in the weight throw with a toss of 14.99 meters (49'-2.25").

On the women's side of the competition, Kristen Dormaier finished 14th in the long jump with a mark fo 5.2 meters (17'-0.75"). Elizabeth Mattila was 13th in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:02.07.

Whitworth's student-athletes were competing against NCAA Division I teams from across the west, including Stanford, California, Nevada and host Boise State.

Next weekend Whitworth will compete at the McDonald's Collegiate Invitational, hosted by the University of Idaho.
