SALEM, Ore. - Whitworth University opened the outdoor track and field season in strong fashion on Saturday afternoon at the Willamette University Opener. Elizabeth Mattila and Ben Spaun each won a pair of events to lead the Pirates. Mattila won the 100 meter hurdles (15.98) and 400 meter hurdles (1:06.22) to lead a strong Whitworth contingent in both events. Jenna Hays (16.32) was third in the 100 hurdles, while Courtney Hutchins (1:08.83) was runner up in the 400 hurdles. The Pirate women also got event victories in the 10,000 meter run by Jo E Mayer (40:34.70) and the 3,000 steeplechase by Emily Morehouse (12:07.83). Kristen Dormaier jumped to victory in the triple jump with a mark of 34'-2". Like Mattila, Spaun also won both hurdle events, taking the 110 high hurdles in 15.49 and the 400 hurdles in 55.41. Cody Stelzer continued his solid sophomore season with another victory in the high jump (6'-8.75"). Whitworth had a great day in the throwing competitions. Jeff Kintner won the shot put (49'-10.5") and finished second in the hammer throw (129'-5"). Joe VanHoomissen won the discus with a distance of 135'-8", while Kory Kemp won the javelin with a mark of 187'-3". Whitworth will host its own combined-event meet on Thursday and Friday before competing at the Community Colleges of Spokane mini meet on Saturday. |
