Whitworth Throwers Dominate Buc Scoring Invite

SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth men's track and field team won the Buc Scoring Invitational on Saturday on the strength of another outstanding day by its throwers. The Pirate men outscored Community Colleges of Spokane 118-101. The CCS women returned the favor by winning with a score of 125.5, ahead of Whitworth's 93.5.

Jeff Kintner won both the shot put and the hammer in NCAA Division III provisional national qualifying time. His shot mark was 16.04 meters (52'-7.5"), while the hammer went 52.23 meters (171'-4"). Ron Whitley also had an NCAA provisional mark in the hammer with a distance of 52.18 meters (171'-2") and he won the discus with a mark of 46.83 meters (153'-8"), improving on the best mark in the Northwest Conference this season. Michael Wemple added the Pirates' final NCAA provisional mark of the day by finishing third with a toss of 59.47 meters (195'-1"). Ryan Weidman of the Bigfoot Track Club won that event with a distance of 67.86 meters (222'-8").

Deonta Edwards of BFTC won the high jump with a height of 2.01 meters (6'-7") and the long jump with a distance of 6.34 meters (20'-9.75").

In the men's running events Whitworth's Nick Gallagher posted the NWC's fastest time in the 5,000 meters this season while winning in 15:08.67. Tim Armstrong of CCS swept both the 110 high hurdles (15.69) and 400 hurdles (56.84). In the sprints, Darrell Stewart of UPS won the 100 dash in 11.27, while Elorm Atisu of Whitworth took the 200 in 22.76.

The final men's team scores were: Whitworth 118, CC of Spokane 101, Puget Sound 35, Bigfoot TC 32, Gonzaga 17.

Brittnee Sanchez and Ashley Hutchinson led CC of Spokane to the women's team victory. Sanchez won both the 800 meters (2:22.27) and the 1,500 meters (4:50.94). Hutchinson won three throwing events. She won the shot put in 12.23 meters (40'-1.5"), the discus in 37.61 meters (123'-5"), and the hammer in 49.57 meters (162'-7").

Whitworth's Tonya Turner raced to a win in the 5,000 with a time of 18:34.68. The Pirates' Elizabeth Mattila swept both the 100 hurdles (15.64) and the 400 hurdles (1:08.65). Emily Morehouse added a win for Whitworth in the 3,000 steeplechase with a time of 11:43.26.

The final women's team scores were: CC of Spokane 125.5, Whitworth 93.5, Puget Sound 44, Bigfoot TC 38, Gonzaga 11.
