Whitworth's Schwarz Named National Coach of the Year
March 19, 2009

SPOKANE, Wash. - After leading the Pirate men's team to a third place finish at last week's NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships, Whitworth coach Toby Schwarz has been named the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Men's Coach of the Year by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

I am honored," said Schwarz. "But mostly this award recognizes the support that Whitworth provides our program, the hard work and dedication of a great coaching staff, and the commitment of our student-athletes."

In his 13th season as Whitworth’s head coach, Schwarz has led his Pirates to third-place team finishes at the last two Division III Track and Field National Championships, including the 2008 outdoor meet. At the 2009 NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, Schwarz’s student-athletes earned three USTFCCCA All-American honors during the two-day event. Cody Stelzer (Jr., The Dalles, Ore.) won the men’s high jump, Emmanuel Bofa (Jr., Puyallup, Wash.) finished second in the men’s 800 meter run, and Jeff Kintner (Jr., Wenatchee, Wash.) took third in the men’s shot put.
