Hymel and VanHoomissen Score at NCAA T&F Championships

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth got off to a strong start at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week (May 21-23) at Marietta (Ohio) College when Alex Hymel and Joey VanHoomissen scored in the men's javelin. In addition, Elizabeth Mattila qualified for Saturday's finals in the 400 meter hurdles.

Hymel (So., Damascus, Ore.) finished fifth in the javelin with a throw of 60.96 meters (200'-0"). His best throw came on his first attempt of the day. Likewise, VanHoomissen (Sr., Renton, Wash.) uncorked a throw of 59.01 (193'-7") on his first attempt of the day to end up in 8th place. Brock Solveson from Concordia (Wisconsin) won the event with a throw of 208'-5".

Hymel, who finished eighth in this event as a freshman last spring, came into the meet seeded 11th. VanHoomissen came into the meet seeded 12th, giving the Pirates five points toward the team's score that it did not have on paper coming into the weekend.

Mattila (So., Ferndale, Wash.) finished fourth in the first heat with a lifetime PR of 1:01.86. Her time held up through the next two heats and she heads to Saturday's final with the sixth best time of the meet. She will run out of lane 8 on Saturday.

Whitworth will have a light day of competition on Friday as Emmanuel Bofa competes in the heats of the 800 meter run. He heads into the meet as the defending champion in the event.
