MOSCOW, Idaho - Competing against the largest set of competitors yet this indoor season, Whitworth track and field athletes performed well on Saturday afternoon at the Runner's Soul Open hosted by the University of Idaho. Junior Cody Stelzer, a two-time NCAA Division III indoor All-American, improved his provisional indoor national qualifying mark in the high jump, clearing 2.10 meters (6'-10.75") to finish fourth of 15 jumpers. His previous best this season was 2.05. Jeff Kintner also improved a provisional qualifying mark in the shot put he earned last night by two centemeters with a distance of 15.63 (51'-3.5") to finish third in a field of 31 throwers. Kintner also finished seven in the weight throw with a mark of 16.22 meters (53'-2.75"). Nick Gallagher made a strong distance debut for the Bucs, running the 5,000 meters in 16:08.70 to finish fourth of 15 runners. Elorm Atisu added an eighth place finish in the 200 with a time of 23.03. Elizabeth Mattila posted a pair of 8th place finishes to lead the Whitworth women. Mattila ran 1:00.16 in the 400 meters and 9.57 in the 60 meter hurdles. Erica Cox had a strong weight throw for the women, finishing with a mark of 12.95 meters (42'-6"). Next weekend Whitworth will travel west to compete at the University of Washington. On Saturday a select group of Pirates will compete in the Husky Classic. On Sunday the larger group will race in the UW Open. |
