Pirates Finish Well at Sasquatch Carnival

SPOKANE, Wash. - Whitworth finished the 2009 track and field regular season with an impressive performance on Wednesday evening at the CC of Spokane Sasquatch Carnival. The Pirates won six events, posted four lifetime personal records and had some key national qualifying marks.

The Whitworth men finished impressively in two events, finishing 1-2 in both the shot put and the 800 meter run.

Jeff Kintner won the shot put with a mark of 16.49 meters (54'-1.25"). It is the third time this season he has surpassed 54 feet. Danjuma Quarless finished second with a toss of 16.36 meters (53'-8.25"), joining Kintner and Michael Nahl as three Whitworth athletes with marks beyond 16 meters this season.

Emmanuel Bofa and Dusty Caseria duplicated the 1-2 finish in the 800. Bofa went under 1:50 for the second time this season with a winning time of 1:49.96. Caseria posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 1:52.78, his first-ever individual qualifying mark.

Also on the track, Tonya Turner won the 10,000 meters with a lifetime PR of 38:08.95.

Alyssa Thompson and Rachel Busick, a pair of freshmen, won field events for the Whitworth women. Thompson won the triple jump with a mark of 10.88 meters (35'-8.5"). Busick won the javelin with a throw of 37.91 meters (124'-4"). Busick has improved her PR in the event by nearly 20 feet since last season.

Ron Whitley won the discus with a throw of 47.02 meters (154'-3") and finished third in the hammer with a mark of 52.94 meters (173'-8"). Alex Couette added a lifetime PR in the hammer with a distance of 50.85 meters (166'-10").

Alex Hymel was runner-up in the javelin with a throw of 58.19 meters (190'-11").

Next up for the Pirates is the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Marietta, Ohio (May 21-23). The Whitworth men will be hoping to match or improve on last season's third place finish in the meet. Final entries will be announced on Sunday.
