MOSCOW, Idaho - Whitworth track and field athletes posted five new national qualifying marks and seven impressive season bests on Saturday at the University of Idaho Vandal Invitational. Emmanuel Bofa posted his second national qualifying mark of the season while winning the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.41. He then helped Dusty Caseria win the 800 meters by setting a strong pace for the first 600 meters. Caseria took over and went on to win the event in a season-best 1:53.48. Elizabeth Mattila was the Pirates' third individual event winner on Saturday. She defeated a pair of athletes from Washington State on the way to winning the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best and NCAA qualifying mark of 1:02.25. Alyssa Thompson posted a season-best mark while finishing third in the triple jump with a distance of 10.98 meters (36'-0.25"). Joey VanHoomissen unleashed a big throw in the javelin, finishing second with a mark of 61.31 meters (201'-2"), joining Alex Hymel as a pair of Pirates to have cleared the 200-foot mark this season. Ron Whitley improved his national mark in the discus while finishing fourth in the event with a mark of 48.96 meters (160'-7"). Danjuma Quarless became the third Whitworth thrower to post a provisional qualifying mark in the shot put this season. His mark was 15.39 meters (51'-1.75"). Whitworth's final tune up of the season will be next Wednesday at the Community Colleges of Spokane Carnival at Spokane Falls Community College. |
