SPOKANE, Wash. - Emmanuel Bofa won the 800 meter run and anchored Whitworth to victory in the 4x400 meter relay to lead five event victories for the Pirates on Saturday at the Washington-Oregon Clash, hosted by the Community Colleges of Spokane on the Spokane Falls campus.

Washington defeated Oregon in both halves of the dual meet scoring, taking the men’s meet 360-343 and the women’s 374.5-302.5. Other Washington schools taking part were host CCS, Eastern Washington and Central Washington. The Oregon schools competing were Portland State, Lane CC, Linfield and Eastern Oregon.

Bofa grabbed the lead halfway through his 800 and stretched it to a comfortable margin while winning in 1:52.22, an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and just off his season-best. At the end of the meet Bofa started the final leg of the 4x400 relay in third place, but overcame a 10-15 meter deficit to give the Pirates a victory in a time of 3:19.82, the best in the Northwest Conference this season. He had to slice sideways between the final runners from Lane and CCS in the final meters of the race to cross the line first.

Jeff Kintner continued his string of outstanding performances in the shot put, winning the event with a throw of 16.29 meters (53'-5"), just off of his season best in 2009. Nick Gallagher gave the Pirate men their fourth win of the day when he defeated a field of 22 runners to win the 5,000 meters in 15:04.74, a four second improvement over his previous season-best mark.

Elizabeth Mattila was Whitworth's lone winner on the women's side, taking the 400 hurdles in 1:03.64, an improvement over her previous season-best and NCAA provisional qualifying mark.

Alex Hymel had the day's second-best mark in the javelin throw. He became the first Pirate to clear 200 feet this season with a mark of 61.15 meters (200'-7"), an NCAA provisional qualifying mark and the third-furthest throw in the NWC this spring.

The Pirates got a pair of strong performances in the 1,500 meters as well. Dana Misterek finished second overall with a time of 4:49.16, a four second improvement over her previous best in 2009 and the #3 mark in the NWC this year. Dusty Caseria finished second overall in the men's race with a season-best time of 4:00.02.

Whitworth will send a handful of athletes to this week's NWC Multi-Event Championships on Monday and Tuesday at the University of Puget Sound.
