SALEM, Ore. - Taking advantage of their first opportunity to compete outdoors, the Whitworth track and field teams - led by the men's throwers - posted great performances on Saturday at the Willamette Opener. The Pirates finished first and second in both the men's shot put and the men's discus, then went 2-6 in the men's javelin. In addition the Bucs won four other events on Saturday. Michael Nahl and Jeff Kintner went 1-2 in the shot put. Nahl threw 15.57 meters, while Kintner went 15.04. Later Ron Whitley won the discus with a toss of 46.57 meters and Joey VanHoomissen was second with a mark of 45.16 meters. The five Pirates finishing among the top six in the javelin included Michael Wemple who was second with a mark of 53.84 meters. Cody Stelzer continued his outstanding year in the high jump, winning this meet with a height of 2.05 meters. Emmanuel Bofa earned his first outdoor win of the year in the 800 meters with a time of 1:55.58. Elizabeth Mattila won the 400 hurdles in 1:05.45 and was second in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.87. Mara Daugs jumped 10.30 meters to win the triple jump. Amber Scott added second place finishes in both the discus (35.22 meters) and hammer throw (42.49 meters). |
