PORTLAND, Ore. -- Lewis & Clark easily defeated visiting Whitworth 3-0 (25-16, 25-13, 25-19) to remain at least tied for first place in the Northwest Conference on Saturday night in Portland. Nikki Bardwell (Sr., OH, Colville, Wash.) led Whitworth with 7 kills and 8 digs and Ka’ipo Rocha (Fr., MB, Pukalani, Hawaii) had 5 kills. Bree Riddle (Fr., S, Spokane, Wash.) had 13 assists and Jordan Hoffnagle (Fr., S, Spokane, Wash.) dug 11 balls for the Pirates. The Bucs hit .000 for the night. The Pioneers fared much better. Margaret Dowling had 12 kills and 14 digs, Kelsey Clark contributed 10 kills and four blocks, Lou Ohki had 15 digs, and Melody Kayser and Andrea Chase had 16 and 10 assists respectively. Lewis & Clark hit .243 in the match. In the first set the Pioneers jumped to a 6-1 lead as Clark dealt out 2 quick kills. Bardwell had two kills to aid Whitworth in a short comeback to make the score 8-7, but L&C used a 7-3 run to grab a 15-10 lead. Sarah Hall served two aces to increase the lead to 22-16, and a Whitworth attack error ended the set 25-16. Whitworth made more errors early in the second set, allowing the Pioneers to grab a 13 point lead at 20-7. Clark slammed five kills in the second set, continuing Lewis & Clark’s run until the set ended 25-13 on kill by Dowling. The Pioneers had multiple players contribute kills to go on a 10-1 run to begin the third set. Bardwell and Rocha each had a kill to help take advantage of attack and service errors by Lewis & Clark to close within 2 points at 15-13, but L&C quickly recovered and went on another 7-2 run to increase the lead to 22-14. Jessamy Holland ended the set with one of her seven kills at 25-19. Lewis & Clark improved to a 13-8 overall and 8-2 in the NWC and will play at home against Linfield on Friday, Oct. 24th at 7 pm.
