Whitworth University's nationally accredited Athletic Training Program will provide you with a strong foundation in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses in a variety of settings.

Whitworth's accelerated dual-degree option allows you to earn your bachelor's degree and M.S. in athletic training, as you benefit from a liberal arts education and gain specialized expertise in athletic training. The intensive full time format of the program gives you the opportunity to integrate coursework and clinical experience, resulting in both eligibility and excellent preparation for national certification. If you've already completed your bachelor's degree, the MSAT can be completed in two years of full-time study.

In order to become a certified athletic trainer (ATC), you must pass a national exam (BOC) and maintain state licensure.

Nationwide changes in the athletic training profession are requiring accredited athletic training programs to transition to the master's level; when the changes are fully implemented, the minimum requirement to become a certified athletic trainer will be a master's degree.

Why Whitworth?

  • Employment of athletic trainers is projected to grow 21 percent between 2012 and 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • Whitworth's is the only accredited program at a liberal arts university in the state of Washington.
  • More than 90% of Whitworth's athletic training students pass the national Board of Certification (BOC) exam on their first attempt.
  • Whitworth's program has been nationally accredited since 1999.
  • Whitworth offers hands-on clinical experience and opportunities to travel.

The Whitworth Athletic Training Program is nationally accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education and strives to graduate athletic trainers who are not only good clinicians, but who embrace Whitworth's mission, engage in servant leadership, and practice holistic healthcare.

The program is designed to prepare students to complete the BOC exam and achieve their goal of becoming certified athletic trainers. We believe that our BOC exam results showcase the success of this preparation.
