Whitworth University Orientation 2013

New freshmen and new transfers: Orientation events and residence hall check-in take place Saturday, Aug. 31, at 9 a.m., in residence halls. Parent activities will run through the weekend until lunch on Sunday, Sept. 1.

Returning students: Orientation events and residence hall check-in take place Monday, Sept. 2, at 10 a.m., in residence halls.

Transfer students are welcome to attend all Orientation Week events; please note that a special orientation for transfer students will occur on Tuesday, Sept. 3, at 10 a.m., in the Hixson Union Building.

Saturday, Aug. 31
9 a.m.-2 p.m. Welcome Fair, Hixson Union Building (HUB)
Meet campus administrators, who will give you the scoop on your academic advisor. Pick up information on student services and student organizations. Get your mailbox assignment and I.D. card, set up a bank account, and take care of other college-life essentials!
9 a.m. Residence Halls Open
New students, proceed to your residence halls and meet the leadership staffers who are anticipating your arrival!
Noon Campus Tour
Enjoy a guided tour of our beautiful campus, beginning at the HUB.
3 p.m. Parents Orientation, Cowles Auditorium
Parents will hear from student life reps and will then meet their son's/daughter's academic advisor(s).
4 p.m. New Commuter Students Welcome, HUB Café
Meet other new off-campus students as well as your student leadership.
4 p.m. Residence Hall Floor Meetings
Resident students, meet your room- and floormates and hear an overview of the exciting week ahead.
5 p.m. President's Reception, Hawthorne House Lawn
Gather outside Hawthorne House, the Taylors' home, on the corner of Hawthorne Road and Whitworth Drive. Enjoy refreshments with President Beck A. Taylor, his wife, Julie, and faculty and staff members before you head off to the buffet at the HUB.
5:30-7:30 p.m. Base Camp Buffet, HUB
Come pick up a delicious meal and find a comfortable seat inside or outside.
8 p.m. Climbers Ready? Climb Away! Ascending the Heights of the Mind & Heart, Whitworth Fieldhouse
Join us for an entertaining and brief history of Whitworth, along with an amusing account from students, faculty and administrators of what life at Whitworth is really all about.
9:30 p.m. Residence Hall Meetings, Hall Lounges
On-campus students, gather in your new residence hall lounges. Parents, adjourn for the evening!


Sunday, Sept. 1
8:30 a.m. Catholic Mass, Seeley Mudd Chapel
9:30 a.m. Worship Service, Fieldhouse

11 a.m. Parent-to-Parent, Cowles Auditorium
Parents, before you hit the road on your way home, join other Whitworth parents for an informal discussion about parenting changes during the college years. The conversation will be facilitated by Dean of Spiritual Life Terry McGonigal and his wife, Suzette, a counselor in the Whitworth Health & Counseling Center.
11 a.m. Academic Affairs Meetings with All New Students:
Team No. 1 (new students in Arend, Duvall and off campus) in Weyerhaeuser 111
Team No. 2 (new students in Baldwin-Jenkins) in Weyerhaeuser Teaching Theatre
Team No. 3 (new students Stewart, Akili, Tiki and Shalom) in the chapel
Team No. 4 (new students in Warren) in Music Recital Hall
Team No. 5 (new students in Cornerstone, Ballard, McMillan) in Cowles Auditorium Stage 2
Team No. 6 (new students in East) in Johnson Science Auditorium
Noon Carabiner Barbecue, Outside the HUB
A scrumptious, lunch on the lawn and a time for fond farewells to family and friends who've shared their students' first weekend at Whitworth. Lunch is $8 for guests without a meal plan.
4 p.m. Mandatory Meeting for All New Students, Cowles Auditorium
Come to Cowles Auditorium for a personal address from President Beck Taylor and a special invitation for Whitworth's new students only.
