Heritage Month 2008
Please join the extended Whitworth family as we gather on campus for Heritage Month 2008, to commemorate the university's 118th anniversary. This year's theme is "Integration of Faith and Politics." Robert Mitchell Lecture
"When the Scriptures Come Alive – An Introduction to Lectio Divina (Praying the Scriptures)"

Robert Mitchell is the former president of Young Life and the former vice president of United States Ministries for World Vision. He received his B.S. in physics from Wheaton College in 1949 and an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Eastern College in 1984. Mitchell was one of the first young people to whom Young Life founder Jim Rayburn reached out in Dallas. In 1953, Mitchell helped Rayburn prepare Malibu Christian Youth Camp (in British Columbia, Canada) for its first campers. That was the beginning of Mitchell's 40 years of service to Young Life. His heart for Christ and for kids, along with his skill in storytelling, are hallmarks of his lifetime of service. |

Each semester begins with opening convocation, which features music and worship, faculty in academic regalia, and an opportunity to honor top students. Whitworth President Bill Robinson and campus historian and history professor Dale Soden will speak. Honorary degrees will be bestowed upon Darrell Guder and Robert Mitchell.
Darrell Guder Lecture
"The Missional Church in the Public Square: Challenges for the 21st Century" 7 p.m., Weyerhaeuser Hall, Robinson Teaching Theatre
Former Whitworth academic dean Darrell Guder is now dean of academic affairs and the Henry Winters Luce Professor of Missional and Ecumenical Theology at Princeton University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Hamburg. As an ordained Presbyterian minister, he served as a student outreach pastor and as a faculty member of Karlshohe College, in the German Lutheran Church. His writing and teaching focus is the theology of the missional church, especially the theological implications of the paradigm shift to post-Christendom as the context for Christian mission in the West. |

Join the Whitworth community for the 11th year of Gospel Explosion! Local choirs join Whitworth students as they share their gifts and talents with the community. The show features singing, mime and stepping, as well as Christian rap and poetry. |

Robert Grimes Art Exhibit and Lecture
"Paintings and Mixed Media Works"

Koehler Gallery, Fine Arts Building
Born and raised in Colorado, Robert Grimes graduated from Indiana University in 1967 with an MFA in sculpture. Since then he has worked as an instructor, a designer, a jeweler, and an illustrator, and always as an active fine artist. His compositions seem to exist on several different time-planes simultaneously. As a lifelong student of the arts, Grimes displays in his work a vital appreciation for both the history and philosophies of art, as well as for old, powerful objects themselves. The exhibit runs through March 20. |
