Whitworth University Student Handbook 2009-2010
Now that you're a Pirate (or a Buccaneer, or, more simply, a Buc) -– whatever you choose to call Whitworth's teams and yourself, as one of their fans -– you are definitely a part of the Whitworth community. So of course you'll need to learn to talk like a small-p pirate, but you'll also need to learn the traditional lingo of Whitworth, such as ...what's a campanile (and how do you pronounce it)? Where's the Back 40? And who is Captain Walker D. Plank?
You may participate in distinctive Whitworth experiences, such as the fall event called Traditiation, when new students learn the age-old secrets and chants of the various residence-hall communities. You may be enrolled in a Core class, learning the same historic material that Whitworthians have been learning for more than 50 years. Or you may be walking across the stage in the Spokane Arena next spring, receiving your diploma and celebrating the successful completion of your academic major.
For 120 years, Whitworthians have tried to catch virgin pine cones, have cheered on the Pirates, and have sung the alma mater.
But no matter which Whitworth traditions you participate in this year, know that there are alumni, current students, and faculty and staff who look forward to what you will bring to the traditions of Whitworth.
We welcome all of you Whitworth Pirates to the 2009-10 school year!
