The challenge organizers have selected a variety of educational events for participants to choose from; you are not expected to attend every event (but it would be awesome if you did!).

Van Jones is a TIME Magazine 2008 Environmental Hero, one of Fast Company’s 12 Most Creative Minds of 2008, and the New York Times Bestselling author of The Green Collar Economy (Harper One 2008). Paul Roberts discusses "The End of Food"

 

As part of Spokane Community College's Speaker Series, best-selling author of "End of Oil," Paul Roberts turns his attention to the modern food economy and finds that the system entrusted to meet our most basic needs is failing dramatically. In this carefully researched account, Roberts identifies the forces that are undermining our capacity to produce food that is safe, nourishing, or adequate to meet the appetites of a rapidly growing population. In "The End of Food,"
readers will see not only how our food systems are breaking down, but how they can be put back on a sustainable course.

Ann Murphy, Education Coordinator for the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System, will present information on Spokane's efforts to encourage sutainability in our community and envrionmental education for our youth.

FLOW

 

The Faith and Environment Network will be shoing the film "FLOW" about the World Water Crisis. "FLOW "highlights the problems regarding the world's dwindling water supply and the far reaching effects that coporate privatization of this resource is having on pullution and human rights. Kathy Cousin's from the Idaho Department of Fish and Game will also be speaking about her work with the restoration of the Pack River Delta on Lake Pend Orielle, an area devastated by erosion caused by the Albeni Falls Dam.

Tour Spokane's Regional Solid Waste Facility to see how garbage is burned and turned into energy. The tour will include outdoor environments (dress for weather) and everyone must have closed-toe shoes.

Michael Pollan is the author of "In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto," published in January, 2008, as well as "The Omnivore's Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals," named one of the ten best books of 2006 by the New York Times and the Washington Post; and others. Pollan is a contributing writer to the New York Times Magazine and is a Knight Professor of Journalism at UC Berkeley.
