Facilities

In 2026, the Whitworth Engineering & Physics Department expanded to the new PACCAR Engineering Building. This state-of-the-art facility allows our students to work collaboratively with peers and faculty mentors to expand the boundaries of our knowledge and create engineering solutions to real-life problems.

The engineering & physics department also continues to host classes and computer labs in the Eric Johnston Science Center.

Teaching Laboratories

Six teaching laboratories, including those dedicated to introductory physics, electronics and optics, as well as those intended for multipurpose use, provide opportunities for hands-on learning in all aspects of engineering and physics.

Collaborative Study Spaces

A study lounge, located near the faculty offices, offers an informal setting for collaboration and social interactions.

The conference room, located near the Engineering Design Lab, is a popular space to brainstorm ideas and practice presentations.

Fabrication and Prototyping

A wood shop, a metal machining shop, a rapid prototyping space with resin and filament 3D printers and a laser cutter allow students to create prototypes to support their lab and design courses, as well as extracurricular and research projects.

Research Labs

A dedicated student research lab, a MEMS research lab with a fume hood and high-temperature furnace, and a Microdevices Lab allow students to work on faculty-guided projects. In particular, the Microdevices Lab is a setting for student researchers to fabricate devices with functional elements at the microscale (less than the thickness of a human hair).
