Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA)
What Is FERPA?
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that outlines the privacy of student records and the obligations educational institutions have regarding the release of educational records and access to those records.
Students will be notified of their FERPA rights annually by digital publication of those rights or by email at the beginning of the fall semester.

Primary student rights under FERPA:
- The right to inspect your education records maintained by Whitworth University;
- The right to request that Whitworth University correct any information in your education records that you believe to be inaccurate, misleading or in violation of your privacy rights;
- The right to exercise control over your education records either by release of your student information to parties outside of Whitworth University or to withhold your information from all parties (with certain exceptions, as provided by law);
- The right to file a complaint with the FERPA compliance office at the U.S. Department of Education.
Students are encouraged to reach out to the Office of the University Registrar with any questions regarding FERPA and student privacy practices.
