This interdisciplinary program engages the study of Latin America from the perspectives of art, literature, culture and economics. Given the close ties between Latin America and the United States, the Latin American studies minor will uniquely situate you to speak to important issues in the U.S. such as immigration, economic development and human rights.

A common refrain from LAS students is, "How did I never learn about this before?" The discoveries you'll make in this program will prepare you to be a leader and advocate for diversity in any field you decide to enter.

Why minor in Latin American studies at Whitworth?

  • Develop intercultural competency as you explore and embrace the diversity of Latin America.
  • Network and build community with program faculty and alumni. Our program's social media accounts connect students with faculty and alumni to discuss research, field experiences and careers.
  • Develop research and problem-solving skills as you explore the strengths and limitations of various disciplinary approaches.
  • Gain hands-on experience through experiential learning and study abroad opportunities. LAS students have worked with museums and women's rights organizations in Central America, studied human rights in Chile, and explored sustainability in Costa Rica and Panama.
  • Expand your language skills and prepare for postgraduate opportunities. You'll be expected to study in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese and French.
  • Get to know your professors. Benefit from personalized advising, faculty-led study abroad programs and faculty-sponsored research presentations.
