State Reciprocity: Applied Behavioral Analysis

Whitworth University's Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) programs are designed to meet requirements for state licensure in Washington State. Please see the information below on how Whitworth's ABA programs can meet state licensure requirements in Oregon, Idaho, California, Hawaii and Alaska. Whitworth University has not made a determination whether our programs meet state licensure requirements in the remaining 44 states. Please contact Megan Griffin (mgriffin@whitworth.edu) for questions about how our programs may or may not meet licensure requirements in other states.

Oregon (Meets Educational Requirements)

ABA Reciprocity to Oregon

Our program leads to Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) license with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB). To be considered for a behavior analyst license in Oregon, an applicant must:

  • Submit a completed application form, which must be accompanied by payment of application fees of $150;
  • Submit two forms of acceptable identification issued by a federal, state or local government agency. Both forms of identification must include the applicant's current legal name and at least one of the forms of identification provided must be photographic. If submitting by mail, front and back of legible (clear) photocopies must be provided.
  • Arrange for proof of certification by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Inc. as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst to be sent in from the BACB to the Office;
  • Pass a fingerprint-based nationwide criminal records check (more information);
  • If applicable, submit and Affidavit of Licensure from any state where the individual holds or has held a behavior analyst whether the license is active or inactive; and
  • Submit required license fee of $200.

Idaho (Meets Educational Requirements)

ABA Reciprocity to Idaho

Currently Idaho does not require licensure to serve as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Thus, WA BCBA certification will allow candidates to practice in Idaho. Applicants can apply for a Habilitative Intervention Certificate in Idaho. California (Meets Educational Requirements)

ABA Reciprocity to California

The Behavior Analyst Certification Board is the professional certification group for behavior analysts. Certification is at two levels: Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA).

For licensure in California, Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) must possess the minimum of a Masters degree, meet requirements for either graduate-level coursework (225 hours) or college-level teaching and research in behavior analysis, meet experience requirements, and pass the Behavior Analyst Certification Examination.

Hawaii (Meets Educational Requirements)

ABA Reciprocity to Hawaii

A license may be issued to applicants who have passed the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) examination and maintain active status with the Behavior analyst Certification Board (BACB) as a board certified behavior analyst or board certified behavior analyst-doctoral.

Alternatively, a license may be issued through licensure by endorsement. To qualify through this route, the applicant must hold a current and unencumbered license in another state, provided that the requirements in that state at the time the applicant was licensed are equivalent or higher than Hawaii's.

Alaska (Meets Educational Requirements)

ABA Reciprocity to Alaska

Steps:

  • Application: Completed, signed, and notarized.
  • Fingerprinting and background reports.
  • Fees: Nonrefundable Application Fee - $200, Behavior Analyst License Fee - $250 Fingerprint Processing Fee - $60 (total: $510).
  • Certification: A certified true copy of certification as a Behavior Analyst issued by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board Inc. is required.
  • License by Examination: If applying for licensure by examination, verification of successfully passing the Board Certified Behavior Analyst Examination as conducted by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board.
  • License Verification: Verification of licensure form from each U.S. state in which you hold or have held a license to practice as a behavior analyst.
  • Release: Completed Authorization for Release of Records form.
