Whitworth seems like a surreal dream-come-true at times. Because I am a first-generation Latina undocumented student coming from a working-class agricultural community, any kind of post-secondary education seemed far removed from my reality until my senior year of high school. And even though my family supports me 100 percent now, they didn’t understand how to be supportive of my educational goals at the beginning.
After four years of unbelievable opportunities, powerful experiences, rich relationships, and lots of reading and writing, I believe that Whitworth has been the perfect place for me. It has given me a place for multicultural growth, humble wisdom, and a sense of purpose. I graduate this May understanding the world better, seeking more challenges, and thanking Whitworth for fostering in its community a deep love for learning.
When it comes down to it, Whitworth functions only because it comprises people who believe whole-heartedly in our mission and decide to invest in one of our nation’s most precious institutions –education. Whether through money, volunteerism, spiritual support, athletic cheer, or other routes, donors ensure that Whitworth continues to offer a truly high-quality education to all of its students, faculty, and staff.
