What is occupational therapy?

Occupational therapy is a health and rehabilitation profession that helps people of all ages to participate fully in daily life activities. Occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants help people who are experiencing physical, cognitive or emotional impairments by providing skilled evaluation, intervention, and health promotion strategies to help them take care of themselves and their families, be productive, and contribute to the social and economic fabric of the community.

Occupational therapy doctoral program at Whitworth

Whitworth University offers its own occupational therapy doctoral program, enabling students to receive professional training that embodies Whitworth's mission of mind-and-heart education. Undergraduate students who pursue our pre-occupational therapy program have the opportunity to integrate requirements for their major with those for a graduate degree. This allows them to begin their OTD graduate studies earlier – and thereby finish earlier – since some of the graduate degree credits will fulfill the requirements for a bachelor's degree. Accreditation Status

The Whitworth University entry-level occupational therapy doctoral degree program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) located at:

Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapist administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). In addition, all states require licensure to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination. A felony conviction may affect a graduate’s ability to sit for the NBCOT certification examination or attain state licensure.

The doctoral capstone experience must be started after completion of all coursework, Level II fieldwork and preparatory activities defined in 2023 ACOTE OTD Standard D.1.3.

Students must complete 24 weeks of Level II fieldwork and all doctoral capstone requirements, including the individual 14-week capstone experience within 27 months following the completion of the didactic portion of the program; while not exceeding a maximum of 48 months total time for program completion.

What related majors can I explore?

The two majors that most closely align with requirements for graduate occupational programs are the B.S. in rehabilitation science with a minor in pre-occupational therapy or the B.A. in health & well-being with a minor in pre-occupational therapy. However, you may be surprised to learn you can choose any major as a pre-occupational therapy student. While it's more common to choose a major in the sciences, occupational therapy school applicants can also choose majors in the humanities like history, English and theology, and complete a significant number of credits in the sciences.
