Coeur d'Alene Symphony 2017 Young Artist Competition

Whitworth University is pleased to host the Coeur d'Alene Symphony 2017 Young Artist Competition. Winners of the Young Artist competition will have the opportunity to perform as soloist with the Coeur d’Alene Symphony. There are five categories: High School Instrumental, College Strings, College Piano, Colleges Winds/Percussion, and Vocals. Applicants will submit an application and recorded audition via CD, DVD, or other online means (details given below). Contestants from each category will be selected to compete in the final round of live auditions on January 7 2017 at Whitworth University. Notifications for the final round will be sent out via email in December. The winners will perform in two concerts with the Coeur d’Alene Symphony. The judges reserve the right to combine divisions or not choose finalists or winners in a division. There will be one winner from each division. Each winner will receive a monetary award of $750, along with a solo performance in two concerts with the Coeur d’Alene Symphony. There may be a Second Place prize awarded at the judges’ discretion. Second Place winners will be asked to perform in the Winners Concert if the First Place winner is unavailable. There is no monetary prize awarded in such cases. High School Second Place winners may have a chance to perform in the summer concerts. Eligibility and Divisions High School Instrumental (up to age 18) College Winds/Brass/Percussion (age 18-25) College Strings (age 18-25) College Piano (age 18-27) Vocals (up to age 35) College applicants do not need to be currently enrolled as long as they are in the proper age group. Important Dates and Information Completed application and entry fee postmarked or submitted online by November 18, 2016. Viva Viola! 2017

This workshop is an opportunity for violists and violinists of all levels to explore and celebrate the world of the viola. Viva Viola! 2017 is open to viola and violin students, middle-school to adults. Plan to come and be inspired about this amazing instrument by participating in group ensembles, a master class (for a limited number of advanced players), a lecture/demonstation by a world-class violist and participation in a final performance. Make plans to attend! PATRICIA McCARTY, viola Guest Clinician From Bach to Keith Jarrett, Patricia McCarty’s performances on five continents have been acclaimed for communicating “a dark tone analogous to the quality of a fine tawny port” [Strad], & “the fine blue-flamed torch of her mind” [Ottawa Citizen]. Her recordings for Northeastern, ECM & Ashmont have received international accolades including Gramophone’s “Critics’ Choice” & Strad “Selection CD”. She has appeared as soloist with the Detroit, Houston, Kyoto and Shinsei Nihon symphonies, Boston Pops, Orchester der Beethovenhalle Bonn, l’Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Turiae Camerata of Valencia, and in recitals including New York, San Francisco, Boston, Detroit, Valencia, Geneva, Caracas, five International Viola Congresses, and a debut at London’s Wigmore Hall hailed by the Times to be “an outstanding exhibition of string playing of the highest American class.” Winner of the First Silver Medal and Radio Prize in the Geneva International Competition when she was eighteen, Ms. McCarty graduated the following year magna cum laude from the University of Michigan, where she studied with Francis Bundra. She has also been awarded two National Endowment for the Arts Solo Recitalist Grants and the John Knowles Paine Award for performance of new American music. Composer Dr. VJ Manzo Lecture Recital

Noted composer and Oxford University Press author Dr. V.J. Manzo will present a lecture recital that explores the use of algorithmic composition techniques from the time of Mozart through his own work with interactive computer systems. Bio: V.J. Manzo (PhD Temple University, M.M. New York University) is Assistant Professor of Music Technology and Cognition at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He is a composer and guitarist with research interests in theory and composition, artificial intelligence, interactive music systems, and music cognition. V.J. is author of several books published by Oxford University Press including Max/MSP/Jitter for Music, Foundations of Music Technology, and co-author of Interactive Composition and Environmental Sound Artists
