Personal Page: Richard Strauch


PhotoRichard Strauch is Associate Professor of Music at Whitworth University in Spokane, Washington, and second trombone in the Spokane Symphony Orchestra.

He is Director of the Whitworth Wind Symphony and teaches applied low brass and courses in music history and conducting. He is an active clinician and adjudicator throughout the northwest. In addition, he leads Whitworth's Domain of the Arts: Rome/Munich study tour during alternating Jan terms, and teaches Music in France as part of Whitworth's France study tour. Under his direction, the Whitworth Wind Symphony has been recognized as one of the most outstanding college bands in the region, and appeared in concert at the 1999 and 2001 MENC Northwest Divisional Conferences, and at the 2002 Western/Northwestern Divisional Conference of the College Band Directors National Association. The Wind Symphony has also recorded and released three compact disc recordings.

Prior to joining the music faculty at Whitworth, Dr. Strauch served as Director of Instrumental Activities at Phillips University, Acting Director of the Wheaton College Wind Ensemble and Assistant to the Director of Bands at Yale University. He has toured Europe as Music Director of the Oklahoma Ambassadors of Music and as conductor of the Fox Valley Youth Orchestra.

As a trombonist, his performance credits include the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, the National Orchestral Institute, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and he joined the Spokane Symphony Orchestra in 2001. He also performed recitals as part of the Phillips University Performing Arts Series and the University of Oklahoma's Norton Distinguished Music Series. His primary teachers were Stephen Fissel, Audrey Morrison, and John Swallow. He has also studied with Jay Friedman (Chicago Symphony) and Milt Stevens (National Symphony) Dr. Strauch is an Artist/Educational Specialist for United Musical Instruments, and plays a Conn 88H-CL.

Dr. Strauch holds Doctor of Musical Arts, Master of Musical Arts, and Master of Music degrees in trombone performance from Yale University, and the Bachelor of Music degree in trombone performance and music history from the Wheaton College Conservatory of Music. He is listed in Who's Who in America, and is a member of the College Band Directors National Association and the International Trombone Association.
