Basic Needs Center (Main Campus Pantry)

Hours of operation: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday; 1-4 p.m.

The Basic Needs Center (BNC) is our main campus pantry. It is located in the Hixson Union Building (HUB) Room 256. The BNC stocks fresh foods, non-perishable food items, refrigerated and frozen foods, personal care items, and some academic supply items. All are welcome. When you come, please bring your Whitworth ID.

Email basicneeds@whitworth.edu or message @wubasicneeds on Instagram with questions or if you need accommodations.

Satellite Pantries

There are four satellite pantries in addition to the Basic Needs Center – one in Dixon Hall, one in Westminster (first floor), one in Lindaman (first floor), and one in the Intercultural Student Center (ISC).

Whitworth's Basic Needs and Food Pantries.

Each satellite pantry is filled with non-perishable food items and some stock personal care products. Most pantries can be accessed during the open hours of the building where they are located (see the map above for specific details on locations within buildings). Each pantry is maintained by a department in the building and restocked as department staff are able.

Please email basicneeds@whitworth.edu or message @wubasicneeds on Instagram with questions or if you need accommodations.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do I have to "qualify" to use the pantry?

Any Whitworth student is welcome to utilize the Basic Needs Network campus pantries. We do not ask for proof of income or any other "qualifying" information. We ask that you present your Whitworth ID at the main pantry when you visit. Swiping your Whitworth ID provides us with general data, such as number of students visiting the pantry. Your information remains confidential.

  • What do I need to bring when I go to the pantry?

Please bring your Whitworth ID and your own reusable grocery bag, if you have one. We sometimes have bags for you to use, but supplies can be limited.

  • How much food can I take when I go to the pantry?

Students are encouraged to take the amount of food they will use, while being mindful that the food and other items they take do not go to waste. Restocking takes place every one to two weeks. You are welcome to check out our shelves, to replenish according to your needs.

  • How many times can I utilize the pantry?

Students are encouraged to utilize campus pantries according to their needs. If you believe you have long-term needs related to basic needs insecurity, please see the resources through the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services.

  • How can I help?

You can drop off donations at the Basic Needs Center located in the Hixson Union Building (HUB), Room 256, during open hours or at the HUB information desk. If neither of those spaces are open and you have perishable food, please drop off at the student success offices, located on the second floor of the HUB. If you are interested in volunteering to help address basic needs insecurity, please contact us at basicneeds@whitworth.edu.

  • Am I eligible for Washington State Basic Food Benefits?

Some students are eligible to apply for Washington state basic food benefits. The U.S. Department of Agriculture Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known as SNAP and called Basic Food in Washington, helps people with low incomes make ends meet by providing monthly benefits to buy food. Learn more about state food assistance and other programs through the DSHS.
