ADA Accommodation Services: 509.777.3380, www.whitworth.edu/ess
Educational support services (ESS) works with students with disabilities who seek academic, housing or other accommodation for disability-related needs. Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a disability is a type of physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. The CDC defines, "A disability is any condition of the body or mind (impairment) that makes it more difficult for the person with the condition to do certain activities (activity limitation) and interact with the world around them (participation restrictions)." Examples of disabilities include but are not limited to attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, autism spectrum disorder, deaf/hard of hearing, mobility impairment, neurological disorders (e.g., epilepsy, migraines, fibromyalgia, Tourette syndrome), psychological disorders (i.e., depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD), speech/language disorders, specific learning disabilities (e.g., dyslexia, dysgraphia, auditory processing disorder), vision loss/blindness.
Our policies and practices are designed to ensure that students have an opportunity to engage in an individualized and interactive process. In order to request accommodation at Whitworth and to determine the level of need and response, students must identify themselves with the office of educational support services. Students must submit an application form and documentation of disability assessment and complete an interview with ESS staff. Each student is responsible to inform this office in advance of services required. Accommodation is not retroactive. Please familiarize yourself with the ESS webpage to get started.

Counseling Services is open Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Appointments can be made by calling the clinic or coming in person. Students must schedule their own appointments. All counseling services are included in the Health & Wellness Fee.

We also provide outreach to students and mental health consultation to students, faculty and staff. Counseling services hosts “Let’s Talk” to provide brief, informal, one-on-one consultation with a counselor, available Monday through Friday at different times of day, on Zoom and in person. Check out our website for updated times: www.whitworth.edu/lets-talk.
The role of counseling services is to provide short-term counseling, to offer services to as many students as possible. In keeping with the mission of the division of student life, counseling services strives to provide brief treatment to facilitate adjustment, improve functioning, achieve resolution of problems, and to relieve acute symptoms as soon as possible. To use its resources most effectively, counseling services utilizes a short-term model of therapy to assist students in addressing issues common in a university setting. Each student is able to attend up to ten individual counseling sessions and unlimited Let’s Talk and group counseling sessions, as appropriate, per academic year.
Our services are available to eligible students whose concerns fall within our scope of practice. Those whose needs cannot be accommodated within our short-term treatment model will be referred to community resources for care. Such referrals might occur immediately following an intake, or they might occur after some treatment and a further assessment of need has taken place. Counseling staff will assist the student in locating private referral sources in the community that match the student’s need.
Counseling services invites all students to make an initial appointment to meet with one of our therapists and discuss their concerns. We encourage all students to utilize our services and view us as part of your support system. We hope we can be of assistance to you so that you may accomplish all you set out to do here at Whitworth.

Internships are a form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional setting. Completing an internship is a great way to explore an industry or career path of interest, gain relevant work experience while developing and honing in-demand skills, and network with professionals in the field.
Opportunities for internships exist in a wide variety of organizations and industries across the globe. Internships can be paid or unpaid and completed on-site at the host organization or completed remotely. Additionally, with the approval of the student’s academic department/faculty internship advisor, students have the option of completing an internship for academic credit through the Whitworth Internship Program.
It is the responsibility of the student to find and secure an internship. Students should plan ahead and start their internship search early as there are steps that must be completed to register an internship for academic credit by the registration deadline. To learn more about eligibility, important dates, and how to pursue academic credit for an internship or field study, visit the Center for Career & Professional Development website. Also, see the Academic Catalog for academic information about internships and field studies.
Center for Career & Professional Development staff members can guide students through their internship search and assist with developing a plan and identifying areas of interest; search strategies and conducting research; internship leads and contacts; résumé, cover letter and interview preparation. Safe Rides: 509.777.4444, www.whitworth.edu/safe-rides
Whitworth University’s safe rides program is a 24/7 security escort service available to all students and employees who need safe transportation within the main campus boundaries, including nearby university-owned neighborhood houses. This service is intended as a backup option when safety is a concern, such as when someone feels unsafe walking alone, is stranded, experiencing car trouble, or needs a sober ride. It should not be used as a primary mode of transportation or as a substitute for walking in groups or carpooling. To request a ride, call campus security at 509.777.4444 and be prepared to provide your location, student ID and destination. Rides are only provided to campus residences or registered class locations. Officers may decline service based on location or safety concerns, and additional resources may be involved if a rider is perceived to be a danger to themselves or others. Security vehicles are not wheelchair accessible. Students requiring accommodations should coordinate with student life in advance. The safe rides program is here to support your well-being – use it when you truly need it.
Please contact the security director for more information on the safe ride program or view the entire safe ride policy at www.whitworth.edu/safe-rides

Early Alert
You too can contribute to student success and community at Whitworth by sharing any concerns that arise – www.whitworth.edu/early-alert. "Pirates keep an eye out" is the motto of a multidepartment group known as the student success team, comprised of academic affairs, faculty, student life, residence life, SDEI and the counseling center. This team reviews and follows up with students who are identified as needing support and resources. If you are worried about the well-being of a fellow Whitworthian, early alerts are the best way to make your concerns known. The student success team reviews early alerts submitted by campus members, and our follow-up approach is based on a relational and holistic care model for the student and the campus community.
Help-A-Pirate
Whitworth's Help-a-Pirate program exists to assist students through one-time interventions of support when an urgent need arises. We have four primary methods for meeting some of the needs that may arise for students: meal assistance program, textbook lending library, technology support and immediate financial hardship. Students in urgent needs can apply online at www.whitworth.edu/help-a-pirate, and a student success representative will:
- Confirm with the financial aid office that the student has accessed all of their financial aid resources or refer the student to the financial aid office if their aid needs to be adjusted.
- Brainstorm alternative aid options with the student and explain that this fund is intended for a one-time use during their academic career.
- When appropriate, explore with student how/if this situation can be avoided in the future, as well as the possibility of a modest emergency grant.
