Whitworth University Health Sciences Department

The Whitworth Health Sciences Department houses the Athletic Training Education Program, the Nursing Program and degrees in health science and community health.

It is our goal to provide students with a theoretical and practical understanding of human health and wellness. A degree in athletic training or nursing will allow students direct entrance into careers in these disciplines.  A health science degree prepares students for professional schools (physical therapy, chiropractic, physician assistant, etc.), graduate programs in health science (human physiology, exercise and movement science, nutrition, public health, etc.), and careers in the health and wellness arena.

The bachelor's degree in health science major is an interdisciplinary curriculum that begins with a foundation in biology and chemistry, and an introduction to health sciences.  Students then study form and function of the human body through classes in such areas as anatomy and physiology, exercise physiology, and nutrition. Courses in topics such as personal health, community health, evidence-based health science, as well as a senior seminar, help students understand the connection with the human body and cover topics related to health, wellness, research, ethics, cultural competence and social justice.  Additionally, internships and electives allow students to explore in greater detail areas of personal interest in science and human behavior.

Developmental theorist David Kolb states that “Learning is the process whereby knowledge is created through the transformation of experience”. The National Society for Experiential Education states that learning through experience promotes intellectual enrichment, cross-cultural and global engagement, civic and social responsibility, ethical development, career exploration, and personal growth.  At Whitworth University, we are confident that an undergraduate degree in one of our health science majors will not only provide students with the foundational knowledge to pursue their post-graduate goals, but will also foster a transformational experience that produces graduates equipped to honor God, follow Christ, and serve humanity through a variety of health-related disciplines.
