How to Apply
Admission Requirements
- Bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited university
- A cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 in the last 90 quarter-graded or 60 semester-graded postsecondary credits
Step 1: Apply Online
Create an account to complete your online application. The online application includes the following:
- Three letters of reference – sent directly from each reference via an online recommendation request. Recommendations should come from individuals who have an extensive working knowledge of you and your writing, be professional in nature, and should speak, more specifically, to the quality of your creative writing, your intellectual/classroom habits, and your overall fit for a low-residency MFA program centered on faith and art.
- Statement of purpose – Please compose a 500-1,000-word (one to two single-spaced pages) essay that explains how the MFA program/genre track fits with your experience and educational goals, why you have chosen Whitworth (specifically) to further your education, and why now is the right time for you to enroll in a low-residency MFA program.
- Creative writing sample - Please submit a creative writing sample in your desired genre of study; approximately 10 pages of poetry or 20-plus (double-spaced) pages of fiction, creative nonfiction or spiritual writing.
Step 2: Submit Official (Unopened) Transcripts
Order official transcripts from ALL colleges or universities previously attended, and have them sent electronically to Graduate Admissions (gradadmissions@whitworth.edu) or by mail directly to this address:
Whitworth University
300 W. Hawthorne Road
Spokane, WA 99251
Step 3: Free Application for Federal Student Aid
If you intend to apply for financial aid, complete a FAFSA as soon as possible. Apply online at studentaid.gov (Whitworth Title IV Code: 003804).
International Graduate Students
Because Whitworth's MFA program is offered in a low-residency format, international students are ineligible to apply. Please explore Whitworth's international graduate admissions page for more detailed information.
