Introduction

As these submissions for the newsletter were prepared earlier this summer, none of us could have anticipated the devastation the recent wildfires would bring to communities across the Spokane region. In the days since these messages were written, many of our friends, neighbors, colleagues and students have experienced profound loss and uncertainty. Our hearts and prayers remain with all those who have been displaced, who are grieving, or who continue to navigate the challenges these fires have created.

Although these letters were written before these events unfolded, in many ways their themes have become even more meaningful. Throughout these pages, you will hear from university leaders reflecting on our history, the year ahead, and the enduring values that define Whitworth and its people: faith, hope, resilience and a deep commitment to one another. They speak of a community strengthened not simply by shared purpose, but by our readiness to stand alongside one another in moments of both celebration and hardship.

As we begin this academic year, we do so with a renewed appreciation for the importance of community. The challenges before us – whether those created by natural disaster or the broader work of advancing our mission – will be met together. May these reflections encourage you, remind you of the strength we find in one another, and inspire us all to continue caring for our neighbors as we pursue the important work that lies ahead.
