New Faculty

Purpose: To introduce new faculty to the mission, culture, expectations, and resources of the university

New Faculty and Lecturer Orientation

  • Four days of orientation and training in August to orient new regular faculty and lecturers to Whitworth culture and resources available to them as they enter the classroom at Whitworth.

Mentor Program

  • New regular faculty are matched with a more senior faculty member to serve as a mentor and resource as new faculty settle into life and teaching at Whitworth.
  • Mentoring opportunities are available to lecturers as well. Contact the Associate Provost for more information.

Teaching

Purpose: To equip faculty to teach effectively, offering rich and engaging opportunities for student learning

Summer Faculty Pedagogical and Course Development Workshops

Teaching Roundtable

  • Presentations and discussions focus on innovative teaching methods to enhance teaching and learning. Lunch is provided by academic affairs.
  • Current schedule can be found on the campus events calendar.

Faith and Learning

Purpose: To engage faculty in exploration of vocation, explore intersections between doctrine and discipline, and to promote contributions of faith to culture and academy

Scholarship

Purpose: To promote and equip faculty to engage in scholarly activity, enriching student learning and contributing to worlds of scholarly understanding, public discourse, and artistic expression.

Faculty Scholarship Forum

  • The Faculty Scholarship Forum exists to provide grassroots support for faculty scholarship, serve as a forum for presentation of research, grant an opportunity to educate colleagues, receive feedback regarding research, and be a place for friendships to begin and flourish.

Internal Research Funding Support

Reid Writing Retreat

  • The summer writing retreat is designed to support faculty in the craft of scholarly writing. Each year faculty gather for a productive time of writing, fellowship, and prayer. This enables participants to make a great start on journal articles, book manuscripts, and other projects.

Research Expansion & Enhancement For Faculty And Students (REEFS) Workshop

  • A three-day summer faculty research workshop which serves to provide a unique environment in which faculty members can focus on articulating new projects or directions to engage undergraduates in research within coursework and scholarship.

Sabbaticals and Mini-Sabbaticals

  • Regular faculty are eligible to apply for sabbaticals and mini-sabbaticals.

Summer Science Research Stipends

  • Provided by the office of sponsored research to support science faculty in their summer research work, and to support student and faculty research collaboration.
  • Contact the director of sponsored programs for more information.

Advising

Purpose: To prepare faculty to serve as knowledgeable and effective advisors on matters of curriculum, career preparation, and graduate school opportunities

Advising Basics

  • Offered in August; provides faculty resources and training in how to academically advise students to successfully navigate their college experience.

General Faculty Development

Adjunct Faculty Workshops

  • Training offered prior to the start of fall and spring terms. Orients adjunct faculty to teaching at Whitworth and the resources available to them to aid their work in the classroom. Contact tnorlin@whitworth.edu for dates and to register.

Faculty Development Days

  • Faculty gather in October and February to explore topics related to their teaching and scholarship. The Faculty Research and Development Committee plans the content for this faculty development opportunity.

Faculty Travel Funds

  • Faculty may complete this form in order to request funding support to attend conferences or other scholarship or development opportunities.
