Social Distancing Guidelines

Whitworth is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for faculty, staff and students. Mitigating the spread of COVID-19 is a high priority right now to ensure the well-being of our community and the continued execution of our mission.

We can all do our part by implementing basic preventive measures and practicing social distancing.

Basic Preventive Measures

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, scrubbing for 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Cover all surfaces and rub until dry.
  • Regularly clean frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, keyboards or phones with a disinfectant wipe.
  • Cough or sneeze into a tissue and dispose of used tissues immediately into a trash can. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into the crook of your elbow, not your hands.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth, which accelerates the spread of infections.
  • Refrain from shaking hands or touching others in the workplace.
  • Do not share glasses, eating utensils, water bottles, etc., with others.
  • If you are sick, stay home and avoid contact with others.

Social Distancing in the Workplace

  • Telework from home. Faculty and staff are encouraged to work from home whenever possible. Staff are to receive supervisor approval first.
  • Cancel in-person meetings. Use online conferencing, email or phone. This applies to people working in the same building.
  • Unavoidable in-person meetings should be short in length and in a room where participants can keep a distance of six feet apart.
  • Stagger work hours. For example, if the normal working hours are from 9 a.m.-6 p.m., stagger reporting times at one-hour intervals between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m., with corresponding staggered times for the end of the day. Timing for lunch and other breaks can also be staggered.
  • Limit gathering in shared spaces such as break rooms, copy rooms or other places where people socialize. Remain six feet apart.
  • Spread out. If workspaces are less than six feet apart, spread out throughout the building using unoccupied spaces such as conference rooms or classrooms.
  • Bring lunch from home and eat away from others. Wipe down the eating space before and after the meal. Avoid crowded restaurants and break rooms.
  • Minimize use of public transportation. Walk, bike or drive or avoid rush-hour crowding by requesting an earlier or later work schedule rather than the standard 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Cease professional travel. All university-sponsored travel is canceled until further notice.
  • Limit personal travel when possible.

Social Distancing for Events, Gatherings & Meetings

  • Older adults and individuals with underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for COVID-19 complications and are encouraged not to attend events, gatherings and meetings. The CDC recommends at-risk populations stay away from gatherings as small as 10 people.
  • Gatherings of 50 or more people are not allowed.
  • Gatherings of less than 50 people are allowed with restrictions. If the gathering is necessary for business operations, contact Michelle Drennen prior to proceeding at 509.777.4974 or mdrennen@whitworth.edu.
