About the Endowment

"I spent 32 years coaching men’s basketball and golf and also teaching in the kinesiology department at Whitworth. I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to coach and teach so many young men and women and encourage them in the Whitworth mission and in their mind-and-heart education.

"I am excited to see the initiation of the Whitworth Sports Legacy endowment. This endowment will be important in maintaining the strong athletic tradition that Whitworth has enjoyed. It will allow our coaches to provide extra opportunities such as enhanced scheduling and athletic trips that might not be available without endowment funds. These extra funds will improve the quality of Whitworth student-athletes’ experiences. Please consider ways you might get involved in this exciting venture."

"My experience at Whitworth was so important to me in many ways. Coming from a family who couldn't afford to send me to college, I was given a scholarship for basketball and baseball. I met my wife there, and the friendships we made there remain as close as ever. The most memorable time at school was being a part of the NAIA 1960 National Championship. We have celebrated many times over the years with reunions on campus. The last one was in 2010. My wife and I have stayed connected to the college and have attended many homecomings. I am grateful for my experience as it changed my life in so many ways."

- Ray Washburn

"I had the privilege of being Whitworth's head women's basketball coach for 24 years. The reason I stayed so long is the amazing colleagues and student athletes with whom I worked and the wonderful opportunities we were given to develop young adults through athletics. Opportunities to have team retreats and to travel around the West region to be challenged by the best teams possible enabled us to grow as people and athletes. Lifelong friendships and support systems exist because of past and current giving by alumni and friends of Whitworth."

"During my 17 years at Whitworth, I witnessed a transformation in Whitworth athletics. It wasn't just stacking up championships, although that definitely did happen, it was more about the pride and excellence our athletes and coaches brought to the entire campus. During that period, we relied heavily on generous donors, Pirate Night, fundraisers and the careful management of institutional resources to create a margin of excellence fund for our student-athletes. What we lacked was a reliable revenue stream to provide a resource base we could build on. In today's extraordinarily volatile financial world, that base is needed more than ever. In other words, a strong Whitworth Sports Legacy Endowment is needed more than ever. I hope you will join those of us who are contributing to this great initiative. Your support is a "Go Bucs" that will never stop cheering on our athletes"
