Literacy Center

The Whitworth Literacy Center is a training site for graduate and undergraduate students who are earning endorsements in special education or reading instruction or a degree in applied behavior analysis through Whitworth University.

The Literacy Center offers tutoring support for elementary students during the academic year. A certified special education teacher manages classroom activities, and a Whitworth University faculty member supervises practicum and advanced practicum students. All programs use direct instruction methods and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.

Elementary Program

The Literacy Center Elementary Program provides assessment of academic skills and individualized and small-group instruction for elementary students who:

  • Have academic goals on their IEPs
  • Are learning English as a second language
  • Are at risk of academic failure

Tutoring is based on direct instruction methods and curriculum includes Language for Learning, Corrective Reading, Reading Mastery, Reasoning and Writing, Spelling Mastery, Corrective Math and Connecting Math Concepts.

Academic Year

A nine-week after-school program for students enrolled in grades 1-6 offered during the fall and spring semesters focusing on reading comprehension and fluency. The fall semester generally runs from the last week of September through the first week of December, and the spring semester generally runs from the last week of February through the first week of May.

Students attend Mondays and Wednesdays from either 4-5 p.m. or 5-6 p.m. in Dixon Hall on the Whitworth campus.

Full tuition is $250/semester. Partial, need-based scholarships are available.

Application deadlines are Sept. 15 for fall semester and Feb. 15 for spring semester (new spring starts only). Application and advanced registration are required and enrollment is limited.
