Literacy Center

The Whitworth Literacy Center is a training site for graduate and undergraduate students who are earning endorsements in special education or reading instruction or a degree in applied behavior analysis through Whitworth University.

The Literacy Center offers tutoring support for elementary students in both the summer and academic year and for secondary students in the summer. A certified special education teacher manages classroom activities, and a Whitworth University faculty member supervises practicum and advanced practicum students. All programs use direct instruction methods and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports.

Elementary Programs

The Literacy Center Elementary Programs provide assessment of academic skills and individualized and small-group instruction for elementary students...

  • who have academic goals on their IEPs
  • who are learning English as a second language
  • or who are at risk of academic failure.

Tutoring is based on direct instruction methods and curriculum includes Language for Learning, Corrective Reading, Reading Mastery, Reasoning and Writing, Spelling Mastery, Corrective Math, and Connecting Math Concepts.

Academic Year

A nine-week after-school program for students enrolled in grades 1-6 offered during the fall and spring semesters focusing on reading comprehension and fluency. The fall semester generally runs from the last week of September through the first week of December, and the spring semester generally runs from the last week of February through the first week of May.

Students attend Mondays and Wednesdays from either 4-5 p.m. or 5-6 p.m. in Dixon Hall on the Whitworth campus.

Full tuition is $250/semester. Partial, need-based scholarships are available.

Application deadlines are Sept. 15 for fall semester and Feb. 15 for spring semester (new spring starts only). Application and advanced registration are required and enrollment is limited.

A six-week summer program for students completing grades K-6 focusing on reading, language arts, and math. The summer program generally runs from the last week of June through the first week of August.

  • Students attend Monday-Thursday from either 9 a.m.-noon or 1-4 p.m. each day in Dixon Hall on the Whitworth campus.
  • Full tuition is $400 for the summer program. Partial, need-based scholarships are available.
  • Application deadline is May 15. Application and advanced registration are required and enrollment is limited.

COVID-19 Precautions

  • The Whitworth University Literacy Center continues to keep the health and safety of our students and employees as our highest priority and continues to follow all Washington State Department of Health guidelines for K-12 school settings.
  • As of March 12, 2022, masking in the literacy center and on Whitworth's campus is optional. If guidelines from the department of health change prior to or during a literacy center session, we will communicate those changes with families in the application and admission process. If you would prefer your child to wear a mask while attending the literacy center, please notify our office or teaching staff so we can best assist your child.

The Literacy Center Secondary Program provides assessment of academic skills and individualized and small group instruction for middle and high school students who have a significant difficulty with literacy or math due to moderate disabilities or other special education needs.
