Vision

In the Dornsife Center we believe in equity for all, starting with our neighbors. In support of this, we aspire to:

  • Advance Whitworth's engagement in Spokane, centering the public purpose of higher education within Whitworth's mission to “honor God, follow Christ and serve humanity."
  • Champion Whitworth’s tradition of award-winning excellence in community engagement by promoting innovation and reciprocity between the institution and the community.
  • Engage students to deepen their understanding and appreciation of human differences, build their capacity to change the world, explore their vocational discernment, and instill an enduring commitment to be active in their community.
  • Elevate the assets and knowledge of our partner communities to foster reconciliation and mutual understanding in the pursuit of an equitable future.

Service-Learning Programs

Academic Service-Learning

Service-learning is a teaching approach integrating academic instruction with community service that engages students in civic responsibility, critical and creative thinking, and structured reflection.

Community Engagement Advocates

Serving as a Community Engagement Advocate is a unique opportunity for students to engage in all aspects of developing and implementing programs for service learning opportunities and experiential education. Students are recruited and trained to lead asset-based programs focused on youth and community development. These programs are designed to integrate academic service-learning and provide a student led approach to transforming communities both on and off campus. Student leaders are challenged to grow personally and professional throughout their work by creating opportunities for fellow students and community members to see themselves as agents of meaningful social change.
