While Abroad

Now that you have arrived and begun your program abroad, there are just a few key things to keep in mind as you get settled:

  • Touch base with home.
It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of your first days on the program, but don't forget to contact your family and our office to let us know that you arrived safely.
  • Finalize your courses.
For most programs, you will have completed your course registration prior to departing the U.S. However, for some programs, you might make final adjustments to your course schedule once you arrive in-country.
    • It is critical that you are enrolled full time on your program (the equivalent of 12.0 U.S. credits).
    • Ensure that your final course schedule is accurately reflected on your Study Abroad Pre-Approval Form (SAPAF).
  • Make contact with the host university's international office.
If you are studying at a host university, be sure to learn where the local international office is and who your contact/advisor is within that office. This staff will be your primary point of contact for questions and issues.
    • If you are unsure who to contact or need further assistance, please email Nicholas McKinney at nmckinney@whitworth.edu.
  • Register with the U.S. Department of State.
The U.S. Department of State provides an array of support services for American citizens abroad. One of the most helpful is the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This program allows you to register your travels with the U.S. Embassy so that it is aware of your presence in-country. The embassy will send you information like real-time safety and security alerts, in addition to other helpful guidance.
