Registering Your Internship or Field Study for Academic Credit

Students wanting to register internships or field placements for academic credit should start by reviewing and understanding the Academic Internship Program Guide.

Keep in mind these important points:

  • Because the process for registering your internship can take five or more business days to complete, it is important to start this process weeks before the term deadlines.
  • You are responsible for initiating the process to find, secure and register internships for academic credit.
  • Approval of all academic internships and field studies is up to the discretion of your academic department's designated faculty internship advisor.

When determining how many credits you should register for, keep in mind:

  • Academic internships require 40 hours of work for every 1 credit registered. Students typically register for 1 to 3 academic internship credits and, generally, work 10 to 20 hours a week during the term.
  • No more than 25 percent of the internship duties may be clerical in nature.
  • If by registering your internship you go into credit overload, you must obtain additional approval to pursue internship credit from your academic advisor. Academic internships are not exempt from the overload fee.
